The Vacheron Constantin Les Historiques Chronograph Ref. 47101 is one of the most celebrated neo-vintage chronographs produced by the Geneva manufacture. Introduced in 1989 as part of Vacheron Constantin’s Les Historiques collection, the watch was created as a modern interpretation of the maison’s legendary Ref. 4178 chronograph from the 1940s. Rather than simply reproducing the original, Vacheron Constantin adapted its proportions and construction for a contemporary audience while retaining the elegant character of the vintage design. Its sculpted, flared lugs, stepped bezel, rectangular pushers, and compact 36–37mm case give the 47101 an unmistakably mid-century appearance.

At the heart of the Ref. 47101 is the Calibre 1140, a highly finished, hand-wound chronograph based on the legendary Lemania 2310 architecture. The movement features 21 jewels and operates the traditional two-register chronograph, with running seconds and a 30-minute recorder, while the dial is complemented by an outer tachymeter scale. Vacheron Constantin extensively reworked and finished the Lemania ébauche to its own standards, giving the watch the refined mechanical character expected of the manufacture. The sapphire display back is particularly significant, allowing the beautifully finished movement to remain visible—a feature that helped make the 47101 especially appealing to collectors.

Today, the Ref. 47101 is regarded as an important modern-era Vacheron Constantin and a standout among vintage-inspired chronographs. Produced primarily in 18k yellow gold, with rarer examples in platinum and distinctive dial variations, the reference captures an era when traditional Swiss watchmaking was beginning to experience a major revival following the quartz crisis. Its restrained 36–37mm proportions, exceptional movement, and direct connection to the historic Ref. 4178 give it a timeless appeal, while its relative rarity has made it increasingly sought after by collectors. The 47101 was eventually succeeded by the Ref. 47111, which introduced a screwed caseback and further movement updates, making the earlier 47101 an especially desirable representation of Vacheron Constantin’s early neo-vintage era.
