Details

Introduced in 2010, the Rolex Submariner reference 116610LV quickly became one of the most recognizable modern Submariners ever produced. Better known by collectors as the “Hulk,” it paired a 40mm stainless-steel Oyster case with a green Cerachrom bezel and matching metallic green sunburst dial—a dramatic evolution of the green-bezel 16610LV “Kermit” that preceded it. Beneath the dial sits Rolex’s automatic caliber 3135, while the Oyster bracelet incorporates the Glidelock extension system for easy adjustment. Production continued until 2020, but among the already desirable 116610LVs, examples made for the Sultanate of Oman occupy an entirely different level of rarity.

The defining feature of these special Omani examples is the Khanjar emblem engraved into the caseback. The crossed swords and curved dagger of the Khanjar form Oman’s national emblem and have a long history of appearing on specially commissioned watches associated with the Omani royal court, particularly during the reign of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. Unlike many vintage “Khanjar” Rolex watches where the emblem was prominently printed on the dial, known 116610LV examples retain the standard green Hulk dial and place the crest discreetly on the reverse of the case. Auction-documented examples have also surfaced with Rolex guarantees issued through Khimji Ramdas, Rolex’s Omani retailer, along with presentation packaging carrying the Khanjar emblem—important supporting details when establishing provenance.

That combination makes the Khanjar Hulk a fascinating collision of two very different corners of Rolex collecting. On one side is one of the most popular modern Submariners, famous for its oversized “Maxi” styling and unapologetically green appearance; on the other is a tradition of watches produced for or presented through the Sultanate of Oman that stretches back decades and includes some of the most coveted special-order Rolexes ever made. Christie’s and Phillips have documented 116610LV Khanjar examples dating from at least 2014, 2015, and 2019, demonstrating just how selectively these watches appeared during the Hulk’s production run. With the Khanjar hidden on the caseback, it can look like a standard 116610LV from across the room—but to collectors who know what they’re looking at, it is anything but standard.

Brand History

Rolex was founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London, before moving to Geneva in 1919 to be closer to the heart of Swiss watchmaking. From the start, Wilsdorf envisioned a wristwatch that was not only elegant, but also precise and reliable—an ambitious goal at a time when pocket watches dominated. Rolex went on to pioneer key innovations in horology, including the first officially certified chronometer wristwatch, the Oyster case (the world’s first waterproof wristwatch), and the Perpetual rotor—the self-winding mechanism that became the standard for modern automatic watches. These technical breakthroughs laid the foundation for Rolex’s enduring reputation for rugged luxury and mechanical excellence.

Today, Rolex is arguably the most recognized name in watches, with models like the Submariner, Daytona, Datejust, and GMT-Master becoming cultural icons in their own right. Whether tied to deep-sea exploration, motorsport, aviation, or mountain summits, each model reflects the brand’s commitment to performance and precision under extreme conditions. The brand’s status is bolstered by its unmatched consistency in design, rigorous in-house testing, and long-standing associations with exploration, sport, and achievement. For collectors and enthusiasts, Rolex represents more than a timepiece—it’s a benchmark of mechanical reliability, timeless design, and global prestige.
